If a person was to come out of hibernation after 50 years and tune in to the Piers Morgan or Rosie O’Donnell show, they would be led to believe that the children in America are dying at a high rate, and these deaths are gun related. The purpose of this article is to give you, the reader, facts to combat your liberal friends’ misinformation. December 14th, the one year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting is fast approaching and the left will be using this date as a day to exploit the tragic deaths of these kids. They will claim that guns, and those who own them, are evil and are the cause of this tragedy. We need to be prepared to answer these ridiculous allegations with facts and logic.
If you were to ask a person on the street to name the top 5 causes of unnatural deaths in people 0-25 years of age, what do you think they would say? Do you think guns would make the top 5? My bet is that they would. Interestingly enough, according the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) this answer would be wrong on all counts. They have published a document that breaks down deaths by age group, a major cause, and then specific cause. Firearms never make the top 5 in any of the age groups, especially children. So what is killing our kids?
“Motor Vehicles” are number 1 in every age group. Ages 1-4 29% die in car accidents, 28.7% die from “drowning.” “Fire/burn” is number 3 with 13%, while “suffocation,” “pedestrian/other,” “fall,” “natural/environment,” “poisoning,” “struck by or against,” “other land transportation” and “unspecified,” all come before “firearms”. In this age group, firearms account for 1.0% of the deaths.
Ages 5-9 have “car accidents” 50.8%, “drowning” 13.5%, “fire burn” 12.8% and “suffocation,” “other land transport,” “pedestrian,” “fall” and “other transport” all before “firearms.” Firearms account for 1.4% of the deaths.
Ages 10-14, “car accidents” 56.6%, “drowning” 10.2%, “fire/burn” 5.8%, with “other land transport,” “suffocation,” “poisoning” all before “firearms.” Firearms account for 2.6% of the deaths.
Ages 15-24, “car accidents” 67.5%, “poisoning” 15.7%, “drowning” 4.2% and “land transport,” “fall” all coming before “firearms.” Firearms make up 1.3% of the deaths.
Now these are unintentional deaths. So what about suicides? The left is always claiming that if a gun is in the house, then a suicidal person will use it. The statistics don’t show this to be the case. In the 10-14 year old age group suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death. The Methods of suicide for this age group—“suffocation” accounts for 62.6% while “firearms” account for 30.4%. “Suffocation” is double the rate of “firearms.” I was stunned when I read this statistic. Even in the older groups, where firearms are the leading method of suicide, the numbers are close. In 15-24 year age group, 49% were “firearms” while 35% were “suffocation.” The left would have us believe that all suicides are accomplished with firearms.
I’m the father of 3 boys. I can’t even imagine losing a child. Why are the firearm deaths so much more important to the left and the media? Why hasn’t Diane Feinstein or King Obama called on the swimming pool industry to clean up its act? When are we going to ban swimming pools? What about cars? Many things other than firearms are killing our kids, but we don’t hear about those in the news at night. When will Piers Morgan dedicate a show to swimming pool deaths? He loves to ask why anyone needs an AR-15? When will he ask, why does anyone need a swimming pool? Or for that matter a car or rope?
The truth is that the left knows the truth about gun deaths in this country, but it doesn’t fit their agenda. Their agenda is to get rid of all guns. The Piers Morgans of the world want the 2nd Amendment abolished. Just the other day Piers Morgan said,
“That to me shows you how clumsily worded, and I say that with great respect for the Founding Fathers, that Second Amendment was,” he said. “The comma in the middle is perhaps the most dangerous comma ever written because it can be interpreted in different ways.”
This statement from Piers tells us all we need to know about him. I wonder if he thinks the 1st Amendment is clumsily worded. The truth is in the numbers, but you won’t ever see these numbers broadcast by the media. Remember, they will always argue from emotion not fact. Piers and others like him will stand on the caskets of those kids from Newtown to preach their lies and misinformation, all while using the grieving families as shields from the truth. They will not allow the facts to get in the way.
